One hundred key sacred documents are presented in this thoughtfully conceived and well executed three-volume set, and each document is given thorough contextual and analytical treatment. Each entry begins with an overview and discussion of context, followed by a time line, information about authorship, explanation of the text itself, and discussion of the document's intended audience and its impact. The entries are further enhanced by study questions, a selection of essential quotes, a bibliography, and a glossary. Arrangement is chronological: the first volume covers 2402 BCE-200 CE; the second, 240-2570; and the third, 1604-2002. All major religions are covered, and many minor ones as well. A few examples from each volume: Egyptian Book of the Dead, Bible (Exodus, and Genesis), Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita; Heart Sutra, Popol Vuh, Qur'an, Mohawk Thanksgiving address, The Life of St. Teresa of Jesus; Emanuel Swedenborg: Invitation to the New Church, Mary Baker Eddy: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Humanist Manifesto, and Yoruba praise poem to Sango. The final volume includes a list of documents grouped by religious tradition.
