There is growing evidence to show that honey is hugely beneficial to our health, from its antibacterial properties to helping relieve hay fever to even inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. Drawing on her background in the biological sciences, Gloria Havenhand reveals how we can harvest the beehive for anything from reviving tonics to beauty treats. Not only does she demonstrate how honey is essential for healthy living, but tackles other under-appreciated and lesser-known bee products such as propolis, a sticky resin, which can help skin conditions such as psoriasis; pollen used to relieve hay fever and boost the immune system and royal jelly and beeswax uesd in cosmetics to rejuvenate the skin. With increasing numbers of people interested in ditching drugs for natural alternatives to combat health problems from allergies to acne, this book is a timely look at how the beehive can help us look and feel better.

Review

a fascinating book...full of home remedies, recipes, bee wisdom, fascinating facts and beekeeping tips, and so lovingly photographed that it really belongs on the coffee rather than the breakfast table --Mail on Sunday YOU Magazine

A charming and informative book...It's the perfect introduction to beekeeping and a good read for all honey lovers. --Lindsey Bareham, SAGA Magazine

Gloria's love and in-depth knowledge of bees is truly astounding she is one of the last true enthusiasts. The academic profession should pay more attention to enthusiasts like Gloria, be they astronomers, ornithologists or beekeepers. These people have a wealth of practical and observational knowledge, which can only be guessed at by so-called experts. This book superbly illustrates this truth.'--Professor Milton Wainwright, Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of Sheffield

'To ease a sore throat, stir a spoonful of honey and a teaspoon of cider vinegar into a mug of hot water and sip slowly, says beekeeper and biologist Gloria Havenhand, author of Honey: Nature s Golden Healer.'--Sainsbury's Magazine

'Gloria is commonly known as the Queen Beekeeper because her encyclopaedic knowledge is built on 26 years of experience of running what could be described as a bee empire two bee farms, and millions of bees who live in red wooden hives which nestle in the glorious Peak District countryside of Derbyshire. 'Honey:Nature's Golden Healer' is beautifully illustrated and packed with easy home remedies, facts about bees and beekeeping, recipes and wisdom about honey that she's scrupulously ensured is backed by scientific proof wherever possible. She also travels Britain lecturing on bees, giving the proceeds to the Sheffield Children's Hospital, which will also benefit from a percentage of the royalties from the book.' --Irish News

From the Author

Let's start with a bit of background.........

I started out centuries ago in the biological sciences. My early experience covered work for the Ministry of Agriculture and large health care companies and `Ye Gods' did this not compel me to rethink our modern pill-popping culture, with all its side effects.

I believe that honeybees, the origin of many pharmaceutical drugs, have been forsaken and forgotten - to our cost.

Little did I realise that planting thousands of Christmas Trees around endless Beehives would result in the production (in good quantity too) of Antibacterial Honey. It was obvious that the usual pale colour of Troway Hall's Famous Honey was changing at certain times - and so was its taste.

Now, the rich aromatic caramel and fruity taste hit the mouth with pizzazz - absolutely electric!

There was only one way to go and that was to get our Honey Tested and Approved.

To our amazement, our Honey was often better than Manuka 10 at a cost that was a third of its price. Notwithstanding this - I had become involved in the medicinal attributes of the Beehive as a whole.

Never forget that bees have been around and survived all manner of plagues, droughts and environmental onslaughts whilst our own evolution has been occurring for less than one twentieth of this time. Even so, Man has depended on wild bee honey combs for their honey to eat, honey to treat - together with all manner of healing products from the hive that you may never have heard of.

This book, I believe, is not just timely for the survival of the bees themselves but definitely for our own longevity and immune systems. It is up to us to challenge invisible additives, preservatives, pesticides and other eco-outrages - more than any other period in our evolution.

Did you know that your body now has up to 500 chemicals it never had or even knew about 50 years ago?
No wonder Hayfever (which was unknown 100 years ago) and skin allergies etc are rampant now.
No wonder adults and children alike are in meltdown with their immune systems. Colds, coughs, splutterings, sneezes, digestive disorders - I could go on and on !

Amazingly, it is not just Honey that comes to our rescue in our time of need but the bees antibiotic wallpaper called `Propolis', the Queen's own substance Royal Jelly and a scaffold of Beeswax itself that all fall slave to the human race in healing, curing and preventing so many ills.

Honey is enjoying a rebirth - and I don't mean any old honey either !

Honey is adulterated and mistreated all over the world - wait until you read about it. You will be in meltdown. Choose your honey with care!

There is growing evidence to show that honey is hugely beneficial to our health, from its antibacterial
properties to helping relieve hay fever to even inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. With increasing
numbers of people interested in ditching drugs for natural alternatives to combat health problems from
allergies, acne, IBS, skin infections (including MRSA) and remember Honey is more effective that over the counter medicines for children's coughs and colds. Didn't `Grandma' know this all the time?

Drawing on my background in the biological sciences, I demonstrate that honey is essential for healthy living - boosting your immune system and helping prevent so many diseases.

I am no eco-warrior - I handle livestock all the time ! But I do know that although antibiotics in animal foods (i.e. pig, chicken and cow food) were banned in around 2006. Why?
Profitable for added antibiotics put up to 15% more weight on the animal, but unfortunately this cascaded down the food chain to you and I - resulting in the surge of Superbugs where your doctor's prescribed antibiotics had no chance of overcoming lethal diseases such as MRSA, E.coli, Salmonella etc. We were and are at the mercy of over production and over contamination of our food and ourselves with antibiotics.

Unbelievably, honey is now used at the first instance and on the frontline of MRSA skin infections - yes actually applied onto the skin.

I have just been phoned by a lady in Cornwall, whose husband had a foot infection which the NHS and the pharmaceutical treatments could not cure over six years. Six weeks application of our Antibacterial Honey, he is clear. He is rejoicing !

Remember - to use the best honey - as honey is a `living food' and often we are offered nothing more than a sugar solution from a Supermarket. It has often been ultra filtrated until nothing remains - it is then `dead' and useless. Don't be tempted by the `green label' and glistening clear honey - ready why!

I show we can harvest the beehive for anything from reviving tonics to beauty treats. Including chapters on Propolis, a sticky resin, which can help skin conditions such as psoriasis and acne; Bee Pollen to relieve hay fever (nothing better) and to boost the immune system and Royal Jelly and Beeswax used in cosmetics to rejuvenate the skin in order to extend our lives.

Accompanied by information about the beehive and life of the honeybee, you will find this book very readable and almost riveting as it shows us the links between honey and good health and why protecting the honeybee is important not only for its own survival, but for our own longevity.

.........Welcome to the Natural Health Service !!
