ShiftsHours: 0800 - 2030Location: Elgin, ILReq Number: 136688Job Details: SUMMARY Responsible for supervising the activities of nursing personnel in all patient care areas, on the shifts when hospital administration is not available, in order to ensure the provision of optimal nursing/Hospital services.  (Assumes administrative responsibility for the Hospital environment during applicable shifts.  Represents the Hospital administration after normal business hours and weekends to problem solve, etc., concerning the operations of the Hospital and patient care.)   ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Participates in the development of nursing goals, plans, policies, procedures, overall nursing care standards.  Communicates and interprets policies and procedures to personnel during applicable shifts. 1.    Member of Nursing Administration team, involved in planning and goal review. 2.    Knowledge of policy review and change. 3.    Assists with education of the employees 4.    Resolves employee issues; utilizes and documents corrective action to individual manager. 5.    Facilitates those activities involving patient education, staff orientation and inservice, and student clinical        programs during assigned shift. 6.    Participates in Hospital/Nursing committees as assigned. Assists the charge nurse in determining staffing patterns for assigned shift and adjusting schedules and assignments to meet staffing needs or shortages according to patient care priorities and unit benchmarks. 1.    Maintains records of unit staffing adjustments on a daily/weekly basis. 2.    Receives "sick calls" for the next shift and assists nursing units with coverage. Implements creative staffing. 3.    Responsible for ancillary departments "call-in", CVOR, Cath Lab, Vascular, etc.  Notifies necessary on-call        personnel in the event of an emergency surgery.  4.     Coordinates efforts and assigns personnel to appropriate areas        in the event of fire and disaster emergencies. 5.    Contacts agency personnel for staffing shortages as approved. 6.     Collaborates with managers/directors when making difficult staffing decisions. Conducts regular nursing unit rounds, rounding and assessing all areas of responsibility.                 1.    Reviews work in progress and evaluates patient care. 2.    Assists with problems; acts as strong clinical resource, i.e., IV skills, basic clinical skills. 3.    Determines unit needs; assists shift personnel when/where needed in emergencies or other        unanticipated situations. 4.    Rounds on all patients delayed in bed placement, answers questions from patients and family members. 5.    Handles routine administrative matters necessary for the Hospital operations. 6.     Facilitates collaboration and positive conversations between nurses and physicians. 7.     Immediately addresses patient complaints. Regularly assesses the ongoing patient care process       1.    Determine the effectiveness in meeting established care and treatment goals. 2.    Knowledge of Hospital policy and procedure. 3.    Compliance with nursing standards. 4.    Initiates or recommends appropriate action to correct or enhance patient care experience. 5.    Collaborates with other Hospital departments to coordinate and improve patient care experience. Participates with other nursing management personnel in the creation and maintenance of a work environment conducive to productive performance, personal development and job satisfaction. 1.    Facilitates and role-models open communication, accountability of role and  recognition of         employee performance. 2.    Receives and disseminates information concerning shift operations, new products and procedures and involves        staff in discussions concerning improvements or changes in patient care. 3.     Responsible for throughput of patients to enhance the flow of patients to and from departments.  May be         required to assist in the transport of patients to the floors. Investigates the more sensitive and complex patient care problems, and assists staff in the analysis and resolution. 1.    Investigates and resolves complaints from and concerning patients, family members and physicians through        interview, facilitation or referral to higher authority. 2.    Utilizes administrative consult process when appropriate. 3.    Investigates and resolves incidents and complaints or suggestions from physicians, patients,        family and staff by corrective action/intervention, explanation or referral to proper authority. 4.    Ensures the accurate documentation of all incidents/occurrences during shift.  Communicates with superior and        appropriate others concerning unusual events. 5.    May occasionally be required to assist in the physical movement of patients. Ensures the presence of availability of all equipment and supplies necessary for effective operations during assigned shifts. 1.    Obtains necessary documents, equipment, supplies and pharmaceuticals essential for effective shift operations. 2.    Contacts Environmental Services and Security personnel concerning the provision of services or assistance. 3.    Ensures the maintenance of a safe environment in accordance with nursing standards, Hospital policy and safety        regulations. Responsible for the administrative duties associated with patient demise, code situations, and other emergencies. 1.    Ensures appropriate parties have been contacted and necessary paperwork has been completed. 2.    Occasionally consoles bereaved family members. 3.     Responds to all Codes and RRTs to insure appropriate action is taken for patient care and safety.         May be designated to record at Codes and RRTs. Ability to actively assess and care for patients on the Med/Surg Units 1.     Able to demonstrate proficiency and maintain clinical assessment of patient status and take orders from physicians 2.     Able to demonstrate proficiency and maintain ability to interpret lab values, vital signs and critical changes in patients 3.     Able to demonstrate proficiency and maintain knowledge and ability to read telemetry strips 4.     Able to demonstrate proficiency and maintain current IV skills and troubleshooting techniques 5.     Able to demonstrate proficiency and maintain current skills of RN, i.e., placement of NG, foley, dressing changes, etc. 6.     Able to demonstrate proficiency and maintain current skills in operating nursing equipment and access to Pyxis.
