Job summary: This position will lead the indirect tax process for School Specialty, Inc. and its legal entities.  The primary focus will be on sales and use tax compliance.  Summary of essential job functions: Manage the efficient, timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual sales and use tax returns using Vertex Returns Program including the processing of paymentsPrepare and submit the monthly Canadian GST tax returnsPrepare monthly account reconciliations for the sales and use tax accountsAssist with the preparation of personal property tax returnsReview and respond to notices from taxing jurisdictionsManage sales & use tax auditsGather and analyze data from multiple accounting systems and data streams to ensure accurate inputs into the sales tax processWork with cross functional teams to analyze issues related to sales & use tax calculation for invoicing and projectsTroubleshoot system errors in Vertex and OracleReview and manage exemption and resale certificates for accuracy and completeness to determine appropriate taxability of customer ordersServe as the system administrator for Vertex softwareSet up taxability for new channel sale customers and product linesConduct sales tax research as neededConduct research on tax rates and application of tax to new and existing locations and product types. Research and evaluate changes in multi-state sales & use tax laws and regulations. Provide correct sales tax calculations, including tax rates, tax exception rules and product mapping to ERP systems.Prepare corporate income tax returns for applicable statesImplement and monitor controls to reduce tax exposureOffer guidance and solutions to other departments and educate them on taxability rulesReview non-trade invoices for the assessment of use taxProvide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers Minimum requirements: Bachelors degree3-5 years experience in sales and use tax Knowledge/Skills required : Strong analytical/problem solving skillsAbility to write procedures and provide training and guidance to other departmentsExcellent organizational skillsAccuracy and attention to detail is essentialAdvanced Excel skillsVertex Returns and O series experienceThe ability to adapt to repaidly changing envoronment
