Summary The Director of Public Safety is directly responsible for all operations of the Office of Public Safety and Security.   The Director plans, organizes, and supervises the daily activities of this office, maintaining a safe and secure learning and working environment for the main campus and off campus sites, while framing departmental activities to support student learning, professionalism and self-responsibility.  The Director provides leadership for the college in all matters relative to the public safety and security of its students, employees and visitors, sites and property.  This position reports directly to the Dean of Student Development. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Develop short- and long-term goals and objectives for enhancing personal safety, emergency response, and property security for all students, employees and visitors utilizing college facilities, sites and property. Provide strategic leadership in planning and implementing public safety and security awareness programs, including campus outreach, customer services, employee training, special events and related activities, from a student centered developmental framework. Supervise and evaluate the work of public safety officers, student interns and others as assigned.  Plan and implement comprehensive continuing education and training.  Hold staff meetings, plan staffing needs, shift coverage and work schedules.  Collaborate with other college personnel as needed, to plan and provide public safety and security support for college activities and events. Supervise/carry out appropriate follow-up and investigation of all reported incidents, collaborating with the college behavior intervention team when appropriate, ensuring that all college safety and security policies, as well as state laws, are properly enforced by public safety personnel. Collaborate with the Emergency Response Team to evaluate effectiveness of emergency preparedness and response plans, training and materials, recommending changes as needed Develop contingency plans for handling emergency situations, planning coverage for special events, training public safety staff and employees accordingly. Provide safety and security presentations/workshops for students, faculty and staff addressing safety policies, procedures, guidelines, emergency response/preparedness, and additional safety topics related to a higher education environment, facilitating student learning, ongoing professional development and self-responsibility throughout. Collaborate with facilities managers, student representatives and staff to review, plan and implement building and facility safety policies, procedures, signage, and informational materials. Stay current with regulations and developments in the public safety field, recommending changes for college policy and procedures, as appropriate.  Review, evaluate and modify as appropriate all internal protocols for the office of public safety, accordingly. Attend public safety meetings, workshops and other events for professional development and networking.   Plan, request and administer the departmental operating budget.  Recommend capital equipment purchases, as well as direct hire and student work study expenditures.  Monitor and report on expenditures, cash flow and income as requested. Use a variety of computer software to maintain files, activity logs and records. Compile data, format and prepare reports as assigned. Collaborate with outside law enforcement, medical, fire and other emergency response centers to create and foster linkages for services. Serve as chair of the Emergency Response Team. Perform related duties as assigned.
